Monographs & You
I’ve been asked …
‘surely there’s only one way to write a monograph, right?’
Well … no.
Leslie explores St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Herbal monographs can be magical resources ~ especially as organizing information can be challenging, whether we’re new to herbalism or we’ve been working with the plants for years.
Herbal monographs are usually typed, traditionally styled texts, highly structured pieces of work that focus on a single herb. Learning to create and work with monographs can help overcome the frustration, overwhelm and chaos associated with searching through multiple notebooks and countless notes to gather information about an herb.
Monograph styles usually follow a more traditional text-only format. We might also choose to center them around any creative medium ~ watercolor, a musical ballad or poem, a zine, video or a text of any kind - handwritten, typed, scrolled … choice abounds.
We can adopt different styles to represent differing relationships with the plants.
There are often similarities between works from different herbalists, centering around key elements. But what elements are key for each of us? How can these elements be best organized into a pleasing working reference tool?
In Monographs & You, we’ll explore these questions. We’ll take monographs apart and put them back together, while keeping each herb at the forefront of our observations and explorations. We’ll
~ explore the architecture of monographs which focus on three relaxing nervines and spend time rambling through my herbal library comparing and contrasting;
~ clarify monograph styles that embraces our individual interest(s) and curiosity before
~ finally, creating a monograph as a personal project, in any style, for a herb of choice. I think of them as personal art forms.
