Number games for the Herbalist

Let’s be real …
it’s hard to avoid numbers
as an herbalist!

Made of knotted cords, khipu were popular Incan recording devices used much like a ledger. This khipu dates from the 15th/16th century and is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

In-person Saturday Feb 28th, 1-4PM in Erie PA

We’ve plenty to think about as herbalists and some of it involves math. I’m pretty certain that we didn’t come to the plants with burning desires to calculate percentages day after day or to spend hours converting ounces to milliliters (and back again), or with pulsing desires to calculate costings.

Sometimes these necessary math skills give rise to uncertainty, even dread. Sometimes choosing to make a folk tincture is indeed a choice. But sometimes, it’s not. Sometimes dosing by the spoonful is ok when there’s a wide safety margin. But let’s face it ~ spoons come in all shapes and sizes.

In this workshop we’ll take a relaxed approach to some necessary math skills for us as herbalists. We’ll work with making tinctures, dosing strategies for single doses and for herbs offered over extended periods. We’ll talk about how to dispense volumes for 5, 10, 15 days and beyond.

We’ll discuss why regular dosing can make a huge difference and explore ideas around “folk”, “scientific” and “measured” approaches to making herbal tinctures.

Emphases will be on enhancing our math skills, the importance of clarity to support client engagement, compliance and of course.

This is a “hands-on” workshop and all are welcome.

Details: We’ll begin at 1PM, the fee is $45 and there will be handouts to take away.
