The Art of turmeric

$45.00

In-person beginning March 10th

This series, in collaboration with the Erie Art Museum, offers an opportunity to get to know a single herb, turmeric, chosen by the International Herb Association as Herb of the Year.

Through hands-on practice, participants will explore foundational concepts of traditional herbal medicine making alongside creative and aesthetic engagement. Skills learned with turmeric can be easily transferred to working with other herbs.

Week One will set a foundation through sensory explorations of turmeric roots and powder, engaging smell, touch, taste, sound, observation, and reflection. Participants will leave with fresh roots, handouts, sourcing tips, and new ways of experiencing plant medicine.

Week Two will examine some of the many ways that we might work with medicinal herbs such as milk-based preparations, water-based decoctions and topical applications, including variations on mehndi. Participants will gain introductory knowledge of herbal preparations, safety considerations, and take home turmeric powder and handouts.

Week Three will focus on tincture-making and fabric dyeing. Drawing on historical practices where textiles were applied for healing, this session explores contact, intention, and absorption. Participants will leave with a turmeric tincture, instructional materials, and naturally dyed fabric to dry and embellish if desired.

Week Four will continue with a printing theme on both fabric and paper, a display of dyed fabrics and a discussion of how foundational principles of herbal medicine and our work with the Art of Turmeric can be more broadly applied to enhance health, autonomy and creativity in our lives.

Dates & Times: Tuesday afternoons in March & April

Week 1: March 10th, 1:30-3:30PM

Week 2: March 24th, 1:30-4:30PM

Week 3: April 7th: 1:30-4:30PM
